In spite of the economic crisis of the past year, UJA-Federation has matched its record for an annual campaign kickoff, as more than 85 philanthropic and business leaders showed their confidence in the organization’s work by pledging $43 million at the home of Alan C. “Ace” and Kathryn Greenberg in Manhattan on October 28th.
Thanking those who helped equal last year’s launch during “extraordinary times,” Jerry W. Levin, UJA-Federation’s chair of the board, said, “Given these financial conditions, when a number of individuals who have given so generously in the past could not make the same contribution, others stepped forward to give significantly more.”
John M. Shapiro, UJA-Federation’s president, said the organization rapidly put its support behind programs and services aiding people hurt by the recession. “We need to continue this type of financial support,” he said.“There is a lot of work left, but we are looking ahead to better times, and with financial help we can make a difference for the women, men, and children in need.”
Natan Sharansky, chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, a beneficiary agency of UJA-Federation, spoke to the group. ♦
