Volunteers in Action

Cindy Ross

Though Cindy Ross is chief financial officer for a nonprofit organization, she wanted to be of service in something she loved beyond her job: spending time with children. So for the last four years she has participated as a Big Sister in the Jewish Big Brother Big Sister program at the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services (JBFCS), a UJA-Federation beneficiary agency.

That’s meant four years of going to movies, sharing pizza, and enjoying other activities every other weekend, all while providing a sympathetic ear to Ross’s little sister.

“Last year was my Little’s bat mitzvah, and she did a beautiful job,” Ross notes. “We had spoken a lot about how she felt about standing up in front of everyone.”

They have begun to talk about future plans of one day traveling to Israel together.

“It’s truly one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. I learned about myself, about commitment, and about being available for someone I care about,” Ross explains.
