Combine Hunter College Hillel with a visually compelling photo exhibit of the Holocaust, and what emerges is an education effort that teaches the next generation about the importance of Holocaust remembrance, heroism, and social action.
The images viewed by Leya Schwartz, a student active in Hunter Hillel, moved her to say, “We, as the youth, are here to fulfill the promise of never again.”
To the Hillel chapter’s executive director, Lisa Pollack, the collection of photographs and testimonies in One Soul: When Humanity Fails aims to “allow our future generations … to channel the evil into an intellectual response that promotes constructive action and awareness.”
The exhibit at Hunter Hillel, one of 12 local Hillels supported by UJA-Federation, was held in December.
Suzanne Peck, chair of UJA-Federation’s Task Force on Hillels, says the exhibit and those like it connect students to their history and “help them understand the necessity of taking a stand.” ♦
