Empowering Impoverished Israelis

Caring for Those in Need

Up to a third of all Jews in New York City, and more than 20 percent of Israel's Jewish families, are living at or below poverty levels.

Throughout Israel, many vulnerable families have slipped further into poverty, thousands of older adults are struggling just to survive, and many middle-class families are unable to meet their expenses

With our support, hundreds of older Israelis can buy the groceries and medicines necessary to survive. And unemployed adults, impoverished Holocaust survivors, and at-risk children are getting the help they need.

The Challenges Facing Many Israelis

  • 25 percent of Israeli citizens — about 1.8 million people — and 36 percent of Israeli children are poor.
  • 400,000 families in Israel suffer from nutritional insecurity.
  • About 28 percent of Israelis are forced to make choices between food and other expenses, such as mortgage, rent, medicine, heating, and electricity.

We provide essential support to beneficiary agencies and grantees to help fight poverty in Israel.

UJA-Federation's Response

Last year, UJA-Federation of New York helped provide:

  • 30,000 impoverished and abused children with programs that offer prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.
  • 4,500 low-income Israelis with access to three food co-ops in Jerusalem and Lod to help them reduce grocery costs by 17 percent.
  • 300 low-income Israeli families with literacy programs to help their children develop language and reading skills at the earliest stages in their lives.
