Passover is a time to celebrate freedom and independence — but for many Jews, the added cost of holiday foods becomes a reminder of financial hardship.
Lessening that pain is the Met Council on Jewish Poverty, a UJA-Federation of New York beneficiary agency that provides close to 50,000 households with matzah, grape juice, and traditional favorites like gefilte fish and packaged matzah ball soup, all at no cost. UJA-Federation’s funding is especially important to Met Council’s operations in the Passover season since kosher holiday foods are not part of federal food programs. Met Council, which operates the largest year-round kosher food pantry network in the nation, is also the leading supplier of Passover products, notes Chief Operating Officer Peter Brest. It delivers the products to its pantries and other community-based organizations in the New York area.
Chief Executive Officer William Rapfogel adds, “Passover food and voucher distribution is the cornerstone of our food program.” He said it is “a critical resource to needy families and many elderly individuals who struggle with the high cost of observing the Passover holiday.” ♦
