Who is eligible for financial assistance?

  • Permanent residents of New York City and Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties.
  • High school students in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grades interested in a teen travel program approved by UJA-Federation of New York. (Trips require a four-week minimum and include merit scholarships and need-based financial assistance.)
  • Individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 interested in a young adult travel program approved by UJA-Federation. (Trips require a two-week minimum and offer need-based financial assistance only.)

How do I apply?

  • Apply directly to Taglit-Birthright Israel or one of UJA-Federation's other approved Israel programs for teens or young adults. We're also involved in organizing special Zankel Taglit-Birthright Israel trips.
  • Each Israel travel program will assess applications and submit a request to UJA-Federation on behalf of the participants.
  • College students or participants who are still claimed as dependents must include their parents' 1040 and W-2 forms as part of the financial aid application.
  • The Israel Experience Center Scholarship Committee will review all applications and notify participants of the results.

What merit scholarships are available?

  • Robert A. Belfer Family Fellowships and Chaverim Awards, for high school students from New York City and Nassau and Suffolk counties. Eligible students must be nominated by a synagogue or UJA-Federation beneficiary agency. Award: $1,250
  • Singer Family Israel Awards and Chaverim Awards, for Westchester high school students. Eligible students must be nominated by a UJA-Federation beneficiary agency or Westchester synagogue. Award: $1,250

What are the criteria for a merit scholarship?

  • Applicants must submit a personal essay with the application, explaining why they want to go to Israel and describing a community-service project they will complete a year after returning.
  • Applicants must be high school students, and will be considered on the basis of their leadership potential.
  • The Israel Experience Center Scholarship Committee will notify award winners.

When are the applications due?

All applications for financial aid or merit awards must be submitted at least two months before the programs depart for Israel.
