Since 2000, Israelis have endured the second intifada, a war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, and a conflict with Hamas in Gaza in response to years of Qassam rocket attacks on Israel's southern border.

Although Israelis are resilient, thousands of children and adults throughout the country continue to need psychological services.

In 2001, UJA-Federation of New York created the Israel Trauma Coalition (ITC). Through the ITC, more than 60 organizations in Israel are helping individuals and communities cope with unrelenting violence.

The Challenge of a Country Besieged by Violence

In the past nine years, more than 10,000 missiles have struck southern Israel, creating psychological and economic damage affecting nearly 1 million Israelis.

Thirty percent of Israelis who live near the Gaza and Lebanese borders suffer from post-traumatic stress. According to Israel's Chamber of Commerce, the economy has lost $35 billion to $45 billion in revenue since the start of the second intifada.

UJA-Federation’s Response

We provide essential support to the Israel Trauma Coalition to help Israelis cope with the impact of long-term violence.

  • At the start of the war with Lebanon, UJA-Federation raised $45 million toward its Israel Emergency Campaign (IEC). IEC funds have provided trauma relief and other services in southern and northern Israel.
  • During the conflict with Hamas in Gaza, the Israel Trauma Coalition trained 350 teams of physicians, nurses, social workers, emergency workers, municipal employees, and factory managers to respond effectively during rocket attacks.
  • New anxiety-relief sites in the south have provided trauma treatment for Israelis and stress-relief workshops for vulnerable populations, including emergency workers who often experience burnout.
  • UJA-Federation supports the 120 Strong program, providing daily outreach to 25,000 vulnerable elderly people in southern Israel, whose day-to-day problems are exacerbated by the region’s ongoing violence.
  • In the last year, our network provided approximately 60,000 Israeli schoolchildren with trauma treatment to help them cope with recent rocket attacks against civilian neighborhoods.
