The Rose Biller Day School Scholarship Fund is designed to help schools support students with financial need. Jewish day schools and yeshivot in the five boroughs of New York City, Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties are eligible to apply.

Up to 200 Rose Biller awards of $5,000 or higher toward the cost of tuition at a Jewish day school are given annually. Schools can nominate any students who demonstrate financial need, and schools are asked to give priority to transfer students from non-Jewish schools and students entering high school. Schools can apply for several students in one year.

Who is this scholarship for?

The Rose Biller Day School Scholarship Fund is designed to help schools support students with financial need. Jewish day schools and yeshivot in UJA-Federation of New York’s eight-county area, including the five boroughs of New York City, Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties are eligible to apply.

What are the scholarship and eligibility details?

Up to 200 Rose Biller awards of $5,000 or more toward the cost of tuition at a Jewish day school are given annually. Students must be currently enrolled or have been accepted to a Jewish day schools and yeshivot in UJA-Federation of New York’s eight-county area, including the five boroughs of New York City and Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties.

Interested schools will be required to meet our eligibility guidelines in order to be considered for grants. Eligibility requires:

  • Use of an independent agency for determination of financial need of all students requesting tuition assistance. Arrangements may be made with FACTS or the School and Student Service for Financial Aid. Other independent agencies may also be submitted for consideration.
  • Proof of the school's 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
  • Public recognition and support of the State of Israel in the school’s curriculum.
  • Health insurance offered to all full-time employees on a nondiscriminatory basis.
  • Recognition of UJA-Federation of New York and the Rose Biller Day School Scholarship Fund in all public materials.

Schools may not submit more than 10 percent of their total student population to UJA-Federation for scholarship consideration. Please note that schools are required to submit their entire student population seeking tuition assistance to FACTS or SSS.

How can day schools apply for enrollment?

As the first step, schools should complete and return the Day School Enrollment Form, along with one copy of each of the following materials:

  • School’s contract with an independent agency
  • School letterhead
  • School’s 501(c)(3) certificate

Our school is successfully enrolled with the Rose Biller Day School Scholarship Fund. What's the next step?

Your school must continue to work with an independent agency — FACTS or School and Student Service (SSS) for Financial Aid — to determine the needs of all students requesting tuition assistance. Create your own internal deadline to make sure that the assessment is ready for our final deadline. Please note that schools are required to submit their entire student population seeking tuition assistance to the independent agency for assessment.

How are the students selected?

Schools are to use an independent agency — FACTS or School and Student Service (SSS) for Financial Aid — to determine the financial needs of all students seeking tuition assistance from that school. Schools must send the names of the students they are nominating for the scholarships to UJA-Federation by Friday, May 4, 2012.

What will the schools submit to UJA-Federation of New York?

Once the independent agencies have identified the neediest families in your school, schools will submit a Scholarship Request Form, indicating students that are transfer students from public school and students that are entering high school. Schools may not submit more than 10 percent of their total student population on the Scholarship Request Form.

Schools should submit their Scholarship Request Form via e-mail to Sara Sugar at by Friday, May 4, 2012. Please note that we will not accept late submissions.

When will day schools find out whether their students were awarded the Rose Biller Day School Scholarship Fund?

Once we receive the completed Scholarship Request Form, the Scholarship Committee of COJIR will review the scholarship requests and determine the funding decisions.  Schools will be notified of these decisions by Wednesday, June 20, 2012.

How many awards can the school hope for?

The number of awards will be finalized once every school submits their final list.

When will the schools get the checks?

Schools that are awarded scholarships can plan on receiving their scholarship check in October 2012, once they confirm that all the students who were awarded a Rose Biller scholarship are registered with the school.

Where does the money come from, and how does it get to day schools?

The Rose Biller Day School Scholarship Fund is supported by UJA-Federation of New York. Grant letters and checks for tuition scholarships are sent directly to the schools.
