Shabbat of Wholeness, Holiness, and Wellness
From Friday, October 15th, to Sunday, October 17th, the Shabbat of Wholeness, Holiness, and Wellness: Responding to the Mental Health Needs in Our Communities will be observed in congregations across the metropolitan area.
UJA-Federation is helping to organize this new communal outreach effort in response to the increased anxiety and depression many congregants are experiencing during these difficult economic times. Even in more secure times, many people struggle with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, and other psychiatric conditions.
Congregations will offer a range of resources, including:
- Sermons and educational programs about how Jewish tradition and community can provide comfort and strength
- Information and speakers on suicide prevention and other mental-health topics
- Tzedakah projects to assist those living with mental illness
In collaboration with the New York Board of Rabbis and the major Jewish movements — Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist, and Reform — UJA-Federation’s Caring Commission and SYNERGY will help offer a community Shabbat to highlight ways that Jewish liturgy, texts, and communities can increase hopefulness and connection, while diminishing despair and isolation.
