UJA-Federation of New York's annual Super Sunday Phone-a-thon returns on February 11, 2007. And again this year, there's a special role for youngsters - the Family Mitzvah Experience, a hands-on lesson in caring for others.
Held annually in support of UJA-Federation's global network of health and human-service agencies, Super Sunday will be run from various locations throughout the greater metropolitan area. In Westchester, an estimated 200 volunteers will staff two sites and phone their neighbors to help raise money for the needy, the sick, and the endangered in New York, in Israel, and around the world.
The local call centers will be at the Jewish Community Center of Mid-Westchester in Scarsdale and UJA-Federation's Northern Westchester office in Mt. Kisco. Last year's overall tally was $890,000, with $344,000 pledged by Westchester residents.
A great success when introduced two years ago, the Family Mitzvah Experience will be held again at the JCC. While their parents are manning the phones, youngsters will have an opportunity to create Purim packages for distribution to isolated and homebound neighborhood seniors. The kids will help design cards and assemble baskets of treats.
Amy Hughson of Harrison is this year's Family Mitzvah Experience chair. Her daughter, Lindsay, is Mid-Westchester teen chair.
Super Sunday Westchester overall chairs are Robin and Alan Colner of Scarsdale, Ron Langus of Mt. Kisco, Marilyn and Bernard Rappaport of Scarsdale, and Heidi and Lloyd Widom of Chappaqua.
Volunteer positions as callers and administrative aides are available for two-hour shifts at both Westchester locations. For more information about volunteering or to register children for the Family Mitzvah Experience, contact Arthur Jacobs at 1.914.761.5100 ext. 134 or jacobsa@ujafedny.org.
