UJA-Federation of New York and the Foundation for Jewish Camping offer Summer Campership Opportunity
UJA-Federation is excited for the opportunity to pilot a Jewish overnight camp incentive program, referred to as “campership” for this summer; this is one more way we aim to elevate camping to its proper place on the communal agenda. “Campership” is meant to attract new campers, regardless of financial need, who are not getting intensive daily exposure to Judaism and who otherwise might choose a secular summer program. As you may know, similar programs have been very successful in several cities across the country and we (UJA-Federation and the Foundation for Jewish Camping) are delighted to pilot “campership” in New York. For a list of almost 140 participating camps, Frequently Asked Questions and to download the application, please click
here and look for Campership Program of the UJA-Federation of New York.

Among the camps participating are the residential Jewish children’s camps in the UJA-Federation Network. Find out more about these camps at www.Jewishsummercamp.com.

Executive for a Day for Donors is May 10, 2007

A record number of donors and agencies are participating in UJA-Federation's third annual Executive for a Day program on Thursday, May 10th.  This year, we were able to assign donors to agencies that are outside of Manhattan including the JCH of Bensonhurst, Samuel Field Y, Shorefront Y, Bronx House, and Mosholu-Montefiore Community Center.

Agency itineraries are varied and  impressive.  For example, donors visiting the 92nd St. Y will meet with the  consulate of Israel and  director of the Tisch Center for the Arts; guests of Jewish Home & Hospital will attend a Board Finance Committee meeting; at the Board of Jewish Education, participants will have lunch with Jeffrey Corbin, president of the board, and learn about the agency's services for children with special needs; guests of Bronx House will participate in a senior staff meeting, and meet with David Edelstein, executive director of the Pelham Parkway Jewish Community Center, and  Howie Martin of Bronx House to learn about cooperative efforts.

At day's end, co-chairs Lisa Silverstein and Philip Altheim will host a cocktail reception at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Columbus Circle, where all participants will have the chance to celebrate the program and share personal experiences.  The program will include remarks from Lisa Silverstein, John Ruskay, Gail Magaliff and Philip Altheim.

AmeriCorps*VISTA Available through Met Council and UJA-Federation
The Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty (Met Council), partnering with the UJA-Federation of New York and thirteen other UJA-Federation affiliated agencies, is coordinating an AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program.  Each year, there are over 1,200 AmeriCorps*VISTA projects nationwide which focus on four key components: anti-poverty, capacity building, community empowerment and sustainable solutions.  The project’s goal addresses helping individuals and communities out of poverty by providing support through the creation of management systems, community outreach, network building, and mobilizing local resources to provide sustainable and long-term solutions.  As full-time Volunteers in Service to America, VISTA members sacrifice a year of their lives to give back to their community through service to low-income individuals.  Met Council and the additional thirteen other UJA-Federation affiliated agencies are currently recruiting to host 22 VISTA members for this initiative, as well as searching for affordable housing opportunities throughout the New York City area.  For more information on the available opportunities, or if you are aware of possible housing options, please contact Esther Larson with Met Council at
