Best Practices in Fundraising

Registration for Best Practices in Fundraising is closed — don't miss your chance to register for our other programs!

A fast-paced series of workshops designed for fundraisers who work on a development team or have been identified as a point person for resource development. Please plan to attend all workshops in this series.

This four-session course provides a comprehensive and systematic approach to fundraising success by introducing best-practice models that participants can apply to their respective organizations. An overview of the crucial components that must be incorporated when planning, strategizing, and executing an effective and ethical philanthropic and stewardship program will be explored.

Highlights include:

  • Preparing and conducting a fact-finding assessment
  • Understanding the elements of a development plan
  • Writing and using a mission-centered and leadership-centered case for support
  • Preparing and introducing explicit board expectations and responsibilities
  • Positioning annual gifts, major gifts, and planned-giving opportunities
  • Becoming familiar with methods of identifying, researching, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors

The course also underscores a successful major-gifts program, with a primary focus on cultivating prospects and understanding the various motivations of donors. Since face-to-face meetings are the most efficient method for raising significant funds, participants will learn techniques of making the appointment and asking for the leadership gift.

Workshops will include participant presentations and exercises based on readings, lectures, and class discussion. All participants will receive Achieving Excellence in Fundraising (second edition) by Hank Rosso.
