Jewish Identity in the Age of Facebook

Prerequisite: Introduction to Social Networking or prior knowledge of social-networking sites.

Through an exploration of social-networking websites, this presentation will help you better understand the ways in which Jewish teenagers and young adults conceive of their own identities today. In addition, you will look at specific ways in which such social-networking sites as Facebook and MySpace, along with other platforms for constructing identity and socializing online, such as YouTube and blogs, can be used by educators and communal professionals to engage a broader Jewish audience.

Instructor
David Bryfman, an Australian-born Jewish educator, has served as the director of informal Jewish education at a large Jewish day school, a Hillel, birthright Israel in Australia, and several other Israel experience programs. David lived in St. Louis, where he directed the Central Agency's Community Supplementary High School and Teen Initiative programs. David is currently a doctoral student in Jewish education at New York University, focusing on Jewish adolescent identity development and experiential Jewish education, and is a current fellow in the Wexner Graduate Fellowship Program.
