Care to Share Initiative

UJA-Federation of New York — in collaboration with Met Council, AmeriCorps, and Hazon — invite you to participate in our first annual Care to Share citywide and volunteer fresh produce drive.

Care to Share will take place from Monday, October 3 – Tuesday, October 18, 2011, encouraging volunteers to symbolically fulfill the Jewish custom of gleaning, a custom tied to the harvest season and the Sukkot period. Traditionally, farmers leave the four corners of their fields unharvested so the needy can glean from the fields with dignity.

Care to Share will allow Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) members to give a portion of their fresh produce shares for distribution to a local food pantry. In addition, the community at large is encouraged to volunteer by donating fresh produce, either from purchase or their garden. This volunteer initiative will help a growing number of needy families combat food insecurity.

How You Can Help

• Donate fresh produce from your local CSA shares at a drop off location.
• Donate fresh produce from your home garden or that you purchase at a drop off location.
• Serve as a volunteer manager.
• Spread the word by sharing our informational flyer (PDF)
• Help us spread the word online — engage with us through Facebook and Twitter by following along at #Care2Share.

Programming at additional agencies and educational guides will highlight the themes of hunger relief, nutrition, and environmental sustainability.
