Synagogue Intensives
Synagogue intensives are intended for synagogue leadership teams ready to deepen their skills and knowledge. Synagogues need to apply to participate in intensive programs.
Alliances, Mergers, and Partnerships
Synagogues that participated in the Alliances, Mergers, and Partnerships workshop are eligible to apply for an intensive consultation with Alban Consultants Alice Mann and Linda Rich. This consultation will assist synagogues (individually or in partnership) in assessing readiness by identifying two or three of the most promising options for further research and discussion and reviewing the issues and steps involved in addressing each solution. More information and application coming soon.
Board Excellence in Synagogues Today
Synagogues that participated in the Board Excellence in Synagogues Today workshop are eligible to apply for an intensive consultation with Alban Institute consultants Dan Hotchkiss and Linda Rich. This consultation will build on the practices for board excellence identified in the workshop, and help synagogue board members to embrace values and practices that will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their synagogue board. Through the consultation, board members will identify priorities for their congregation and develop and implement action plans that will both build on their strengths and focus on opportunity areas. More information and application coming soon.
Building the Leadership Pipeline: Talent Identification and Development
Committed, energized leadership is the foundation on which vibrant, visionary synagogues are built. The Building the Leadership Pipeline program will enable congregations to put in place a structured, intentional approach for cultivating committed, energized lay leaders. The program will include an introductory webinar followed by a half-day workshop, which will be repeated in Long Island, New York City, and Westchester. Ongoing support will be provided over the course of the year through conference calls and other media to provide coaching, guidance, and course-correction for participants moving into the implementation of the leadership pipeline process. More information and application.

Synagogue Consultancy Project
Selected synagogues are matched with expert volunteers as consultants to assist with outreach, including marketing and volunteer engagement, financial sustainability, website development, and fund development. Engagements result in three- to six-month discrete projects in the chosen area of interest, and synagogues have the opportunity to apply for $1,000 implementation grants at the culmination of their consultation work. More information and application.
Synagogue Visioning and Planning
At critical junctures in the life of every synagogue, leaders feel a need to assess direction and plan for the future. An expert consultant will share expertise on the key steps of successful synagogue planning and provide guidelines for choosing the right planning process for particular needs. The consultation includes a review of critical issues and an exploration of data and research options with a select steering committee, a vision-to-action workshop for key stakeholders, and a subcommittee session to develop a charter and strategic direction to address the identified critical issues. More information and application.
Synagogue Volunteers Leading Volunteers
A six-month long intensive program for synagogue volunteer leaders supported by a synagogue professional will enable participating synagogues to draw on learning and networking to plan for and meet volunteer management goals. An initial orientation day on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., will be followed by a series of conference calls, a mid-year training session, and a final debriefing session, helping each synagogue meet their articulated volunteer management goals by the end of the year. Past participants have said:
“It was extremely valuable to hear how other [volunteer managers] addressed similar challenging issues.”
“As a result of [Synagogue Volunteers Leading Volunteers] we are starting a new program ... with new volunteers taking the reins.”
