At 19, Alla Leventul is already a volunteer leader overseeing a new tutoring initiative at Kings Bay YM-YWHA.

A freshman at Baruch College, Leventul coordinates and supervises 10 high school students who tutor elementary school children in reading, writing, and math at an after-school program held at the Kings Bay Y, a UJA-Federation beneficiary agency.

She first started volunteering when she was 16 and helped raise money for a beautification project at the Y. Leventul enjoys her current role because she sees how the teens help the children gain a new understanding.

“We always promote teamwork and help each other, because that’s the way to accomplish the goal — to help children,” she notes.

Leventul, who participated in the Volunteers Leading Volunteers training program supported by UJA-Federation, notes that she “really learned how to be a leader and learned so many skills. It’s such a great experience.”
