Supplies for Success... Give Back With A Backpack
Join Supplies for Success, UJA-Federation of New York’s initiative to provide brand new backpacks filled with school supplies for children in need. Since its inception by UJA-Federation’s Long Island Connections division in 2001, the program has grown from helping 68 children in its first year to providing tools to succeed for more than 11,000 kids last year.
Before school starts each year, we distribute the filled backpacks through UJA-Federation nonprofit partners, schools, shelters, and other local organizations. Working with Supplies for Success provides meaningful ways for you to teach your children the valuable lessons of volunteering and giving back to the community.
Here’s how you can make a difference.
- Join us at one of our summer backpack assemblies. We’ll fill backpacks with school supplies in:
- Chair and organize a school supplies drive at your workplace, local synagogue, club, camp, school, or library. Toolkit available upon request.
No time to shop? $18 will fill a backpack for one child. Please help as many children as you can. Make a donation to provide for a filled backpack.

Message from our Chair
Welcome to our community-wide effort to help local kids in need succeed.
We believe every child deserves a shot at success. How can you learn if you don’t have a pencil and paper to take notes? How can you feel confident coming to school unequipped? Hundreds of thousands of local children start school without backpacks, without basic school supplies – feeling ashamed and anxious.
We believe every child should start school on a level playing field because education is the recognized pathway out of poverty. Children should walk into school on the first day with hope, excitement, and with the tools they need to succeed. Plus, their stressed- out caregivers should not have to choose between food and school supplies – a choice no one should have to make.
This year we will meet the challenge again and distribute thousands of filled backpacks across the metro New York area from East Hampton to Northern Westchester; and even send hundreds of filled backpacks to Israel for the first time ever. But we cannot do it without YOU! We hope you will join us in making a difference this year.
It's my honor to work with all of you in furtherance of our Jewish values of tzedakah, charity, and tikkun olam, repairing the world.
