March 7th, 2017

UJA-Federation of New York applauds Governor Cuomo and his administration for their steadfast support of the Jewish community and for his efforts to strengthen the bond between New York and Israel. Against a backdrop of rising anti-Semitic incidents, the Governor’s recent Unity trip to Israel, and related announcements, send the critical message that New York will not be silent when its people or institutions are threatened.

UJA is grateful for Governor Cuomo’s proposed new initiatives that aim to strengthen economic and cultural ties between New York and Israel. These include:

The formation of 22-Member Panel that will Explore New Opportunities to Strengthen Economic and Cultural Ties Between New York and Israel

An Initiative To Expand Trade and Build Partnerships between New York and Israel

Connecting New York and Israeli Law Enforcement to Share Best Practices for Counter-Terrorism Operations;

Supporting Academic and Research Exchanges between SUNY and CUNY Colleges and Israeli Universities

UJA is also extremely proud that Linda Mirels (UJA Board Chair ’13 -‘16) will serve as co-chair and Alisa Doctoroff (UJA President ’13-’16) will be a committee member of this new Israel-New York Commission.

“It was an honor and a privilege to accompany Governor Cuomo on his Unity trip and I am very pleased to serve as co-chair of the New York-Israel commission which will greatly benefit both countries. Governor Cuomo is a true friend of the Jewish people and a role model for others to show solidarity and stand up in the face of any form of racial or religious intolerance,” said Linda Mirels.

“Governor Cuomo has once again demonstrated his steadfast support for Israel and the Jewish people. He is not afraid to speak up for what he believes to be just and right: protecting and standing by the citizens of New York. UJA is proud to call him our Governor and thanks him for his unwavering protection and support for Jewish Institutions in our city and state,” said Eric. S. Goldstein, CEO, UJA-Federation of New York.
