Russian Division Author Event: The Refusenik Movement: From the Outside and Inside

Author Philip Spiegel and political activist Dr. Yosef Begun will discuss the struggle of Jewish activist refuseniks for the right of Russian Jews to be part of the Jewish people, and how organizations supporting Soviet Jewry in the free world were galvanized into action as a reaction to the Leningrad Trials of 1970. Philip Spiegel is the author of the new book, Triumph Over Tyranny: The Heroic Campaigns That Saved 2,000,000 Soviet Jews. Dr. Begun endured a 16-year internment in the Soviet gulag for involvement with Jewish underground activities. He is the subject of a new documentary, Through Struggle You Will Gain Your Rights. Yigal Kotlyar will moderate.
