Statement from Mitchell Silber, Executive Director, Community Security Initiative
November 17th, 2023

On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, Community Security Initiative, a joint effort of UJA-Federation of New York and JCRC-NY, contacted local law enforcement after detecting a map circulating on social media listing local Jewish-affiliated organizations along with a corresponding map of their office locations. The published post encouraged protests and leaflet drops. Law enforcement immediately launched an appropriate response. Then, on Thursday, November 16, CSI detected a second set of maps targeting corporate entities.

As of Friday morning, November 17, CSI has been working closely with law enforcement to secure Jewish institutions and NYPD is responding to over a dozen protests that have taken place across the city. According to the NYPD, over 20 arrests have been made and they continue their vigilance to keep New Yorkers safe.

We are extremely grateful to NYPD, along with Governor Hochul, Mayor Adams and other elected officials, who have strongly and unequivocally condemned harassment, and/or threats to the Jewish community and have vowed to take the strongest appropriate action against those who break the law.

Just as universities have recently suspended activist groups for incendiary activity that broke campus codes of conduct, we call for a full investigation into the group behind the maps and their associated activities.
